Your customers are starting to ask AI instead of Google. Can it find your business?

Your customers are starting to ask AI instead of Google. Can it find your business?

For twenty-five years, being found online meant one thing: ranking on Google. You optimised for keywords, you climbed the list of blue links, and customers clicked through. That model is now changing faster than anything we have seen since Google launched, and most North East businesses have not yet noticed it happening to them.

People are increasingly asking a question and getting a single answer, straight from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot. No list. No ten results to choose from. One answer, drawn from a handful of sources the AI decides to trust. The only question that matters for your business is whether you are one of those sources.

The short answer

AI search visibility is about being the business that AI tools name and cite when someone asks a question in your field. As people shift from typing keywords into Google to asking full questions of AI assistants, the sources those assistants quote win the enquiry, and everyone else becomes invisible. Getting cited is not luck. It comes down to how your website is built, structured and trusted, which is exactly why optimising and futureproofing your site is now essential rather than optional. One Design Group builds AI search visibility into everything we produce for businesses across the North East, and it is one of the things we know better than almost anyone in the region.

Why does AI search visibility suddenly matter?

Because the volume of traditional search is falling and AI-answered search is taking its place, quickly. Gartner predicts traditional search engine volume will drop by 25 percent by 2026 as people turn to AI chatbots and virtual agents instead. This is not a distant forecast. It is already visible in how your own customers behave.

ChatGPT alone now serves more than 800 million people every week, according to OpenAI, close to a tenth of the world’s adult population. Google now places an AI-generated answer above the traditional results for a growing share of searches. When someone asks which heat pump installer covers Northumberland, which accountant is best for a small limited company, or who to trust for a kitchen fit-out in Newcastle, a rising number of them never scroll to a list of websites at all. They read the answer the AI gives them, and they act on it.

If your business is not part of that answer, you are not losing a ranking. You are losing the enquiry before it ever begins.

How is AI search different from Google rankings?

Traditional search gave you a list, and a business on page one could still win a click from position four or five. AI search does not work like that. It reads a small number of trusted sources, synthesises them, and returns one answer, often naming only a couple of businesses. There are far fewer slots, and the competition for them is far more ruthless.

This changes the goal. It is no longer enough to rank. You have to be the source the AI reaches for and trusts enough to quote. That depends less on chasing keywords and more on whether your website clearly, credibly and unmistakably answers the questions your customers are actually asking, in a form AI systems can read and rely on.

Google rankings were a list. AI search is a single answer. If you are not the source it cites, you are not in the conversation.

What happens to your business if you do nothing?

Nothing visible, at first, which is the danger. There is no penalty notice and no ranking drop to alert you. The traffic simply thins as more of your customers get their answer from an AI that never mentioned you, and you feel it as quieter enquiries with no obvious cause.

Meanwhile, AI systems tend to reinforce what they already say. A business that gets cited becomes more likely to be cited again, because being referenced is itself a trust signal. Every month a competitor is building that citation share and you are not, the gap compounds in their favour. The businesses that move early on AI search visibility are quietly banking an advantage that becomes harder and more expensive to close the longer it is left.

Why your website is still the foundation

Every one of these AI tools ultimately reads the open web to decide what is true and who to trust, and your website is the single asset you fully control in that process. If it is thin, vague, poorly structured or years out of date, you are giving AI nothing solid to quote. If it is clear, current, well-structured and authoritative, you are handing it exactly what it needs. This is why building and futureproofing your website is now the core of getting found, not a separate job you do once and forget.

Optimising your site for AI search is not a plugin or a one-off trick. It is a way of building: making sure the questions your customers ask are answered on your site in plain, specific language, that your expertise and credentials are unmistakable, and that the whole thing is structured so a machine can read it as confidently as a person can. A brochure site built in 2019 was never designed for any of this. A site built for AI search is a business asset that keeps working as the way people search keeps changing.

What actually gets a business cited by AI?

There is no single switch, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling a shortcut that does not exist. Getting consistently cited comes from getting several things right together, and the craft is in how they are combined for your specific business and sector. In broad terms, it rests on a few things:

Clear answers to real questions. AI tools cite content that directly and specifically answers what people ask, not marketing copy that talks around it. That means knowing the questions your customers actually put to AI, and answering them properly. It is also where good content and campaigns and AI visibility become the same piece of work.

Structure a machine can trust. AI systems read meaning, not just words. Content has to be organised and marked up so a model can understand what it is, who it is about and how reliable it is, without guessing.

Authority and a consistent identity. AI leans heavily on trust and reputation, weighing real expertise, credentials and how consistently your business shows up across the wider web. That is as much a brand and positioning question as a technical one, and the two have to pull in the same direction.

We deliberately do not publish the full method here, because the detail of how we do it is a large part of the value, and it moves as the AI tools themselves change. What matters for you is that these levers exist, they can be measured, and getting them right is the difference between being quoted and being skipped. Pulling them together is the heart of our AI and automation work.

The businesses that win AI search are not the loudest. They are the ones AI trusts enough to quote.

Why work with One Design Group?

We are a North East creative and digital agency, and AI search visibility is one of the areas we have gone deepest on, well before most agencies started paying attention to it. We build it into every website we produce rather than bolting it on afterwards, we keep pace with how the AI tools are evolving, and we translate all of it into plain language and practical work for businesses that do not have an in-house marketing team.

We are also based here, which matters more than it sounds. We understand the North East market, the sectors that drive it and the way buyers in this region actually make decisions. When we work on your AI visibility, we are thinking about the specific customers you want to win, not a generic national audience.

And we will always be straight with you about where you stand. If your site is already in good shape, we will tell you. If there is real work to do to futureproof it, we will show you exactly what and why, in an order that makes sense for your budget.

Find out how visible your business is in AI search

The first step is simple: find out whether AI tools can currently find, understand and recommend your business, and where the gaps are. That is exactly what a conversation with us is for. We will look at how your site stands up to the way people search now, tell you what is working and what is exposing you, and give you a clear, honest view of what futureproofing it would take.

No pitch deck. No jargon. No proposal until you ask for one. Book a free discovery call, or come in for a coffee at our North Shields HQ and we will talk it through in person. The way your customers search has already changed. The businesses that adjust now are the ones AI will be recommending in a year.
