Damp Stop
A bold rebrand and website that turned a specialist trade into a standout brand
The
challenge
The business now known as Damp Stop came to us trading as Durham Preservation, and the first challenge was the name itself. A name tied so tightly to a single county would restrict growth and limit the company’s ability to position itself as a specialist across the North of England, so renaming was the first and most important step we took together.
Beyond the name, the real challenge was differentiation. Damp proofing, condensation treatment, woodworm, wet rot and dry rot are essential services, but they are rarely exciting, and homeowners have a genuine choice of supplier. The job was to make Damp Stop not just visible but the obvious choice.
That meant standing apart from a whole sector. Competitors lean on unsettling images of rot and decay, so the opportunity was to build a brand warmer and more trustworthy than anything else in the market, one that led with reassurance rather than fear.
Our
approach
We worked closely with Damp Stop to understand their business, their competition, and – most importantly their true value proposition. What set them apart was not just technical expertise, but their genuine commitment to customer care: minimising disruption, going the extra mile, and ensuring every client felt safe and looked after throughout the process.
That insight led to one of our favourite moments of creative clarity. In a throwaway comment during a strategy session, someone said “we dry harder” – a playful nod to the famous Avis tagline. It stuck immediately, because it perfectly captured both the work ethic of the team and the reassurance customers were looking for. It became the brand’s central strapline.
Rather than filling the website with unsettling images of rot, damp, and decay – the kind of imagery that dominates the sector, we made a deliberate creative decision to lead with outcomes. The photography and messaging focused on people: homeowners happy, relieved, and comfortable in their homes, safe in the knowledge the problem had been resolved. This positive, benefit-led approach gave Damp Stop a distinctly warmer and more trustworthy presence than its competitors.
