Empire Theatre
A 150th anniversary campaign that celebrated one of the North’s most iconic stages
The
challenge
The Empire Theatre in Sunderland is the largest theatre in the North of England, and the brief was to create an advertising campaign marking its 150th anniversary. A stage that has welcomed acts from The Beatles to Laurel and Hardy needed a campaign worthy of that history, and one that landed with an audience spanning generations, backgrounds and tastes.
The challenge was not simply to announce the milestone but to make it resonate with an extraordinarily diverse audience. A single message would never speak equally to pensioners, teenagers, comedy fans, music lovers and theatre-goers, so the campaign had to find breadth without becoming generic.
It also had to carry the warmth, wit and character a venue of this standing deserves. The 150th anniversary was a moment of civic pride as much as a marketing milestone, and the work needed to make people smile and feel proud of the theatre it represented.
Our
approach
We developed a series of campaign concepts that addressed the audience’s diversity directly, rather than trying to find a single message that would work for everyone. By creating distinct executions that spoke to different audience groups – from older theatregoers to younger visitors, from fans of classic comedy to lovers of live music – we were able to give the campaign genuine breadth without losing focus.
Humour was central to the approach. It felt entirely in keeping with the spirit of the theatre and the performances it has hosted over 150 years. The ads were crafted to feel celebratory and inclusive – the kind of campaign that makes people smile when they see it, and feel proud of the venue it represents.
The campaign was developed across multiple formats: press advertisements, bus stop panels and large-format billboards, ensuring strong visibility across the city and beyond.
